First off I give five stars for the tour and experience of the monastery itself and for my wonderful guide Madhu. The bike (a 200cc machine which in all honesty had seen better days) was dropped off at the hotel and after some quick checks by me donned the supplied helmet (no gloves btw hence the 4 stars) and we were off. Riding through Katmandu takes a lot of concentration and awareness, the roads are chaotic, noisy and heavily polluted (I enjoy this type of riding). About 20 mins in I did need to take a break as the fumes from the old trucks and buses stated to mess with my head, give me a headache and anxiety. After a regroup all was well. The roads switch from paved to washed out (larger European tour riders take note) to cratered due to heavy traffic, heavy rains and heavy construction. Arriving g at the monastery was the highlight, my guide explaining the history and stories. I also had the privilege of sitting in during prayer as 200+ monks chanted their prayers. Schedule your trip to coincide with prayers as it is very special. Grabbed a coffee in the cafe and then headed back to Katmandu, stopping for local food along the way. A hugely memorable and wonderful experience I will never forget. Recommend to Pelago provide better bikes and equipment and you’re all set.
