Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. On its main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace. We will explore the former old slave market, visit Anglican Cathedral, Sultan Palace, Freddy Mercury museum and more. After walking tour we will continue by boat to Prison island. The British First Minister of Zanzibar, Lloyd Mathews, purchased the island in 1893 and constructed a prison complex there. No prisoners were ever housed on the island. The station was only occupied for around half of the year and the rest of the time it was a popular holiday destination.
