I'll also discuss the largest political massacre in the Citadel with the sole Mamluk survivor and why restoring the exquisite Alabaster Mosque cost so much money. Discover the fortified Castle or Citadel of Saladin as well, taking in its strategic setting atop the Moqqatam Hills as well as its tall sickle-shaped walls and sturdy watchtowers. The mosque's outside is covered in Alabaster Stone, its windows are constructed of copper, and its inside is decorated with lovely polychrome artwork that has been gilded in copper. You may also view the clock tower, which Louis Philippe, King of France, gave to Mohammad Ali Pasha in appreciation for his priceless gift of the obelisk that was taken from the Luxor Temple and brought to France. The church has numerous antique, rare Coptic icons and relics, including those of many prominent martyr saints, including St. George.
