Its streets are winding, narrow and elusive; its squares are luminous, secluded and intimate; its palaces, mansions and churches are brimming with history and art. There are still remains of mosques, minarets, Spanish-Muslim cisterns and above all a very Andalusian essence and a taste of everyday life, bustling and cheerful. In the Albaycín there are abundant cármenes, which are houses with gardens, typically Granada and Mudejar towers. The viewpoints of San Nicolás and San Cristóbal offer magnificent views of Granada and the Alhambra. Originally from India, they arrived in Spain in the 15th century, after wandering around Europe and Africa. The reddish, dry hill, bristling with pitas and prickly pears offers panoramas of indescribable beauty: the Alhambra towers, the white slopes of the Albaicinero farmhouse and the greenery of the Valparaíso Valley through which the Darro runs.
