It is the largest island in Mexico with a length of 64 km and a width of 16 km. Cozumel was recognized as a biosphere reserve in 2016. This island is also the sanctuary of the toadfish, which is listed as a vulnerable species by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
