Highlights

Ascend into the volcanic heart of Hokkaido with a ride on the Usuzan Ropeway, a scenic aerial journey that lifts you from the base of Mount Usu to its rugged summit. Departing from Kazan-Mura—a charming “Volcano Village” of souvenir shops at the foot of neighboring Showa Shinzan—this six-minute gondola ride offers a front-row seat to the raw beauty of Shikotsu-Tōya National Park. As you glide upward, glass-walled cabins reveal sweeping vistas of Lake Toya’s shimmering expanse, the steaming silhouette of Showa Shinzan, and the distant, snow-capped grace of Mount Yotei. It’s a breathtaking ascent that marries the thrill of elevation with the quiet awe of nature’s volcanic theater.

At the summit station, perched 729 meters above sea level, step out onto observation decks that deliver postcard-worthy panoramas. Gaze west toward Lake Toya’s serene shores, south to the still-active slopes of Showa Shinzan—born from a wheat field in the 1940s—and east to Mount Usu’s Ginnuma crater, a stark reminder of its fiery 1977 eruption. A short walk unveils more trails and viewpoints, letting you linger amid the geopark’s ever-changing landscapes, shaped by eruptions over millennia. Whether you’re a geology buff or simply chasing Hokkaido’s wild allure, the Usuzan Ropeway transforms a day trip into an unforgettable dance with the earth’s primal forces.

  • Scenic Cable Car Ride: Soar above Mount Usu for panoramic views of Hokkaido’s volcanic landscape.
  • Summit Observation Deck: Take in breathtaking vistas of Lake Tōya, Mount Showa-Shinzan, and the Pacific Ocean.
  • Volcanic Wonders: Learn about the area's active volcanic history and geological formations.
  • Nature Trails: Explore walking paths at the summit for a closer look at the unique natural scenery.

In return, they enjoy the natural blessings of the volcano, including breathtaking scenery, fertile farmlands, and healing hot springs.

A Glimpse into the Volcanic History of Mount Usu

The region has experienced four major eruptions in the 20th century, each leaving a significant mark on the land:

  • 1910: An eruption from the mountain base resulted in the formation of Meiji-shinzan, with over 45 craters created. The eruption also led to the discovery of the Toya Hot Spring.
  • 1943–1945: A new mountain, Shōwa-shinzan, emerged as a wheat field was dramatically uplifted during the eruption from the base of the mountain.
  • 1977–1978: A powerful eruption from the summit sent volcanic plumes soaring 12,000 meters into the air. The Usu-shinzan peak was formed due to ground upheaval near the river mouth.
  • 2000: The most recent eruption occurred near the Toya Hot Spring area. Thanks to early prediction and timely evacuations, there were no casualties, marking a success in disaster preparedness.
