In ancient times, this site was the most sacred ground for the Eleusinian Mysteries, a religious rite that entailed secret ceremonies in honor of Demeter and Persephone, goddesses of the harvest and motherly love.
Eleusis is also famous for its Eleusinian Walls, a series of fortifications that were erected in Athens around 180 BC to protect Eleusis from Spartan invaders.
From Eleusis, you will visit the nearby archaeological museum and then proceed to Athens.
