North of the nation's capital, Colombo, on Sri Lanka's west coast is the city of Negombo. The ruins of the 17th-century Dutch Fort now shelter a jail close to the lake. The Hamilton Canal, built during the Dutch era, feeds into Negombo Lagoon, which is bordered with fishermen's cottages. South of the canal is Colombo. A colorful ceiling covered with religious paintings adorns the Neoclassical St. Mary's Church, which was finished in the 1920s.
