— What You Can Expect —
Venture out from Seoul to the mysterious DMZ for a glimpse of the war-torn
history between North and South Korea. Get whisked away to Imjingak Resort.
Located 7 km from the Military Demarcation Line, the resort is dedicated to
the 10 million South Koreans separated from their families. The three-storied
Imjingak is surrounded by several monuments, among them Unification Park and
North Korea Center. Outside Imjingak, 12 unique tanks and warcrafts are
displayed in memorial of the war. Here also lies The Freedom Bridge, where
13,000 POWs were exchanged in 1953.
Continue to The Third Tunnel of Aggression, first discovered by South Koreans
in 1978. Similar to the Second Tunnel yet much closer to Seoul (only 52 km
away), the Third Tunnel signifies the real military threat from the North.
Overlook North Korea and various locations including Gaeseong, Songaksan, Kim
Il-Sung Statue, and Cooperation Farm (Geumamgol) from Dora Observatory. The
slogan on the facade, "End of separation, beginning of unification," is the
epitome of the Korean people's hope for a unified nation. The observatory
allows a clear view of the North Korean region near the DMZ with the help of
binoculars.
As the northernmost stop on South Korea's railway line, Dorasan Station is the
living reminder of the North-South separation. Located 56 kilometers from
Seoul and 205 kilometers from Pyeongyang, the station was opened as a tourist
attraction on April 4, 2002 right before the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup.
