Currently around 49,000 inhabitants. Puerto del Rosario is a late bloomer. Hence unfortunately no impressive historic city center with buildings from different eras. The fact that Puerto del Rosario has only developed late is because it has not always been the capital of Fuerteventura. It was not until the year 1835 that it took over this role from Betancuria. Officially, the year before Antigua was briefly the main city of the island. When Puerto del Rosario became the capital, it was still called Puerto de CabrasThe place was initially known as Puerto de Cabras or Puerto Cabras due to the historical presence of goats of these animals that grazed on its coastline.
