Minokichi is widely recognized as one of the oldest and most venerable "Ryotei " (Japanese traditional restaurant)in Kyoto. Its origins date back to the first year of the Kyoho Era in Edo period (1603-1868 CE), when Juroe Satake, a descendant of Satake Akita, came to Kyoto from Ogaki in the Mino Province and ran a "Koshikake teahouse" on the Sanjo riverbank. Later, with the permission of the Kyoto governor, he became one of the eight Kawauo Ikesu (It is a great honor to be called "Kawauo Ikesu" as a famous restaurant in this period) , and has continued to do business here for some 300 years.
