To rent and drive in Japan, the driver must present all of the following in original form at the rental counter:

• Passport
• Valid domestic driver’s license
• International Driving Permit (IDP) under the Geneva Convention (1949) format

• IDPs are valid for 1 year from the issue date and 1 year from Japan entry (entry stamp required).
• Entry through self-service immigration requires an official entry stamp, which must be obtained manually.
• IDPs from countries under the Paris (1926), Washington (1943), or Vienna (1968) Conventions are not valid in Japan.
