indulging in our geothermal mud and sulphur waters, experiencing the healing
properties local Māori have been using for centuries. It’s a Rotorua
experience you’ll never forget.

Free Guided-Tour
Complimentary guided-tours run daily at 10:30am and 2:30pm, subject to
availability. Alternatively, a self-guided map is provided on arrival.
Additional Information
- The mud bath has a time-limit of 20 minutes once a day for health and safety reasons.
- The minimum age for the mud baths is 2.5 years of age, whereas for the sulphur spa is 6 months of age. Children must be aged 12 and over to participate in the carving.
- Your swimwear and towels will have a sulphur smell to themafter your experience and will need to be cleaned thoroughly. We recommend using old swimwear, or if you have any concerns to hire or buy from Hell’s Gate, subject to availability.
- The chemical makeup of our muds and waters will tarnish most jewellery, particularly silver. We recommend removing it and waiting 24 – 48 hours to put it back on.
- All complimentary services are subject to availability.

Went well and very informative
The walk around the geothermal site was interesting and an eye opener, however whilst we had high expectation on the mud bath part, we all came out rather disappointed. Honestly getting into the mud is just all hype with no real benefits. Also it was pretty shocking that for such an activity that they are promoting, you only provide VERY basic showers without shampoo, but more importantly not even a towel was provided despite the high entrance fee (you will have to pay extra to rent). Front desk service was rather unfriendly and monotonous - perhaps it was the end of the day but it made me feel like we were just added burdens to another day's of work. But the rest of the staff inside were very friendly and helpful, so that was a reprieve,
Hells Gate was a really interesting place to visit, exploring the different geysers etc. The mud baths however were a bit of a factory experience. A lot of people and the mud seemed dirty (is that possible lol) from all the people before. Didn’t seem very hygienic at all.
