The name Bacalar derives from the Mayan phrase „Sian Ka’an Bakhalal”, which means „the place where the heaven is born”. It is located in the south of the Mexican Quintana Roo state, which has become a popular place for eco-tourism and provides a place of relaxation for all visitors. In terms of location, this beautiful place is just 40 kilometers north of Chetumal (state capital) and about 335 kilometers [south] from Cancun (3 hours and 40 minutes by car). After arrival, we are going to eat a local lunch and then visit “Fort San Filipe de Bacalar”, also known as “St. Filip Bacalar “, which is located in the historic center of the city. Next, we will get on the boat and sail into the depths of the Bacalar Lagoon, where we will see three different Cenotes: Cenote Bruja, also known as the Witch’s, is the deepest cenote (over 100 meters deep). Cenote Esmeralda is known for its deep shade of blue color and the cenote Cocalitos, whose substrate is made of stromatolites (or living stones), rock formations composed of thin laminates of calcium carbonate precipitated from seawater as a side effect of cyanobacterial life.
