Highlights

This ticket provides access to Ishibutai Kofun, a designated Special Historic Site. Situated in Asuka Village, which was Japan’s capital in the 7th century, this site significantly contributed to the country’s early development. To protect its rich history, strict regulations limit new construction, enabling the village to retain its charming rural character despite being near urban areas.

Among the various ancient sites in Asuka, Ishibutai Kofun stands out as one of the most famous and visited. It is thought to be the burial place of Soga no Umako, a pivotal figure in early Japan’s political, economic, and cultural evolution. This remarkable tomb demonstrates the advanced stonework techniques of its time, built from large granite blocks, some sourced from mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. Ishibutai Kofun exemplifies ancient craftsmanship and engineering prowess.

As the site pursues UNESCO World Heritage status in 2026, it presents a unique opportunity for visitors. With this ticket, you can explore the ruins, enter the stone chamber, and even touch the ancient structures. Although the original sarcophagus was repurposed for castle construction in the Middle Ages, a replica is available for viewing on the outer bank.
