I had a wonderful afternoon with Fish (Xiao Yu) who was patient when I initially was unsteady on the bicycle as it has been a long time since I rode one. She signalled the turns in advance to me, slowed down often to wait for me, and warned me in advance when we were approaching crowded areas. I really enjoyed just cruising around on the bicycle in the cool weather like a local, riding small lanes, hearing about buildings, history and the locals' lives. We visited a lot of places including an ancestral hall where an Chinese opera practice was going on, a former training school for leaders from the farmlands, a Wing Chun martial arts school led by a descendant disciple of Ye Wen, a wet market with friendly stall owners, tasting snacks like a pastries, fruits, a local pineapple "beer" and, oh my, this delicious roast meat from a nondescript everyday looking shop, and a local park where ritirees were sunning themselves, playing with grandchildren or with shuttlecocks. The roast meat rivalled what I ate in Yan Ting in Singapore, just that it wasn't warm. The bicycle rode well once I got used to it. We ended riding along the Pearl River, catching the beautiful sunset and glimpses of locals at play. Our ending place coincidentally was where the annual light festival was held, so I even got to see some of it. This tour is fantastic and well worth the money. Just be prepared to ride for 4+ hours and end up with some sore legs and feet.
It was one of the best experiences my family had ever been on. Our guide Cherry was fantastic and the time we spent with her flew by like a breeze, she was awesome and very informative about all of the history of Guangzhou. We had a great day with her and we are grateful that she helped us see the city through her eyes.
