The Brera Botanical garden, located in the historical center of Milan, not far from the famous Palazzo Butera, which houses an art gallery, Braidense library, Academy and Observatory, extends over an area of about 5,000 square meters. The creation of this oasis is very attractive, because it does not have the character of a real Botanical garden, given the small size of the area and the presence of trees that create shade, commissioned by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, who laid the Foundation of it in 1774. The garden project was entrusted to father Fulgenzio Whitman, but it originally belonged to the Jesuits, and which was later subjected to the elimination of existing trees, the construction of a new greenhouse. Taking an example from the Hortus OEconomicus typology, similar to the Collegium Theresianum in Vienna, he wanted to make it suitable for growing trees and herbs for use in medicine and pharmaceuticals.
