- Itinerary Introduction -

Great Buddha of Kamakura

  • The Kamakura Great Buddha, a bronze statue of Amida Nyorai located within the Kotoku-in Temple of the Jodo Buddhist sect in the ancient capital of Kamakura, is commonly known as the Kamakura Great Buddha. It stands 11.3 meters tall, 13.35 meters including the pedestal, and weighs approximately 121 tons. Constructed in 1252, the statue's flat features, low topknot, and forward-leaning posture embody the style of Song Dynasty Buddhist statues popular during the Kamakura period. It is a representative statue of the Kamakura period and has been designated a National Treasure of Japan. Unlike the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple in Nara, which has undergone numerous restorations, the Kamakura Great Buddha has remained largely intact, making it a truly precious and precious sight.
  • Minamoto no Yoritomo established the Kamakura Shogunate (1192-1333), the first military government, in Kamakura. For 140 years, Kamakura, as the center of Japan, experienced tremendous development in all aspects, including politics, economy, and culture. However, with the establishment of the Muromachi Shogunate's central role, Kamakura was marginalized and began to decline. In particular, after the Battle of Koga in Shimosa Province in 1455, Kamakura regressed to a village focused solely on agriculture and fishing. It wasn't until the mid-Edo period, with the revival of shrines and temples, that Kamakura gradually became a major tourist destination in Japan.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, formerly known as Kamakura Hachimangu, was a central deity of deity worshipped by samurai during the Kamakura Shogunate (1192). It holds a deep connection with the first shogun of Kamakura and is renowned throughout the Kanto region. It is considered one of Japan's three major Hachimangu shrines, along with Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto and Usa Hachimangu in Ōita Prefecture, Kyushu. The shrine's extensive grounds include several designated National Historic Sites. Furthermore, it boasts numerous flower and plant displays and is a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. It has also been awarded one star in the Michelin Guide.

Komachi Street

  • Komachi-dori, stretching from Kamakura Station to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, is a famous and bustling street in Kamakura. Numerous shops line the streets, selling a wide variety of small goods. Kamakura's diverse offerings, including souvenirs, Japanese handicrafts, and local delicacies, are popular with locals and tourists alike. Many of these shops have been featured on various websites and in guidebooks. Don't miss them if you pass by.

Enoshima

  • Enoshima's formation is said to have begun in April of the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign (552 AD), when sand began to rise from the seabed. After 21 days, the island was formed. Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei contains a fascinating legend about the island's origins. Legend has it that a vast lake, 40 li in radius, surrounded Tsumura (present-day Kamakura City). Within the lake dwelt a five-headed dragon. He caused landslides, widespread disease, and devastating floods and typhoons. Unable to stop his evil deeds, the village was left deserted. Thus, Koshigoe (present-day Kogoe, across from Enoshima) was formed. One day in the 13th year of Kinmei's reign, dark clouds suddenly covered the sea, shaking the heavens and the earth. A beautiful fairy appeared from the clouds, and an island suddenly emerged from the sea. The dragon fell in love with the fairy at first sight, promising to renounce his evil ways and propose marriage. His unwavering efforts and good deeds eventually led to his marriage to the fairy. From then on, the five-headed dragon, along with the gods, transformed the island and protected its inhabitants. Legend has it that the dragon is the incarnation of Benzaiten. Even Tokugawa Ieyasu once visited the shrine. During the Edo Period, the island became a popular tourist destination for residents of Edo (present-day Tokyo). And because of Benzaiten's musical talent, it has long been a favorite spot for kabuki actors.

Eshima Shrine

  • Eshima Shrine was founded in 552, the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign, and its regular festival is held in early April. The shrine's colorful wooden eight-armed seated statue of Benzaiten, a tachi made by Fujiwara no Masahiro from Hizen Province, a eight-sided gazer tortoise, the origin of Eshima, and a bronze torii gate are all designated as valuable national cultural properties. Benzaiten is also known as the God of Wealth, attracting many worshippers and tourists. The nearby White Dragon King, known for its money-washing water, is said to bring good fortune to those who wash their coins there.

Kamakura High School

  • Kamakura High School, located in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, serves as the model for Ryonan High School in the film "Slam Dunk." The intersection near the station is the setting for the iconic scene of Hanamichi Sakuragi and Haruko Akagi greeting each other. Standing at the intersection, the ding-dong ringing of the streetlights evokes the passionate, youthful memories of Slam Dunk. Even now, years later, visitors to this spot can't help but snap photos, as if commemorating their youth. I believe what we witness isn't just a memory. The sea, the campus, and the streets depicted in Slam Dunk hold immense significance for anyone born in the 1980s. Being able to revisit the places of our youth, to relive a fleeting moment of youth, gives us another reason to say goodbye.

Sightseeing the Shonan Coast by car (not included in the itinerary, only
sightseeing by car)

  • Cross the railway crossing and the road, then descend the stairs to the famous Shonan Coast in Kanto, Japan. It's a paradise for surfers and beachgoers. On clear days, you can even see Mount Fuji. Furthermore, it's frequently featured in Japanese travel programs, television, and films. *Due to force majeure such as strong winds and waves, we may not be able to access the coast.

Enoden Electric Railway Experience

  • The Enoden tram connects Fujisawa and Kamakura. Its route takes in most of Kamakura's famous sights and offers stunning views of the Shonan coast. The Enoden is an essential and iconic form of transportation when it comes to Kamakura. The sight of the tram zipping by has frequently appeared in Japanese films and anime. So, don't just watch it from afar; you can experience the thrill of riding it yourself.
  • ※You will take the Enoden Electric Railway from Kamakura High School to the Great Buddha of Kamakura.
  • Please be sure to follow the guide closely on the way to the tram. If you fall behind, you will be responsible for the consequences.
  • This fee is a free item. If you are unable to take the Enoden due to force majeure, the fee will not be refunded.

Tokyo Station Hotel

  • Located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, in the heart of the Marunouchi business district, this two-level station serves the Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu, Nagano, Tokaido, Chuo, Sobu, Yokosuka, Keiyo, Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Narita Express, Tokaido, Tokyo Metro, and Marunouchi lines (station code: M-17). It serves as the starting point for numerous railway lines and is one of Tokyo's major stations. The main building, the Tokyo Station Red Brick Building, is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. Renovated in 2012, it perfectly replicates the station's original appearance 100 years ago.

Shinjuku

  • Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's most famous and bustling commercial districts, with popular areas concentrated around Shinjuku Station, including the Shinjuku Exit, West Exit, and South Exit. It's a shopper's paradise, boasting department stores, electronics shops, drugstores, and trendy clothing stores. Department stores like Odakyu, Keio, and Isetan are all good choices. Shinjuku is also home to Kabukicho, Japan's most famous red-light district, home to countless restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, and entertainment venues, earning it the nickname "Japan's No. 1 Entertainment Street."
