The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres high. then in the evening you can have a village safari around the Sigiriya Village, which could be a life time experience to you all.

The site dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD), who chose this site as his new capital. He decorated the walls with frescoes, and built an impressive palace right on top of the rock column, accessible only through the mouth of an enormous carved lion.
