Explore New Zealand’s wild southern coast on this scenic full-day adventure
from Dunedin to Te Anau. Journey through the remote and rugged Catlins, a
region filled with natural wonders, native wildlife, and off-the-beaten-track
gems. From coastal cliffs to ancient forests, quirky art stops to cascading
waterfalls, this tour is packed with unforgettable highlights and guided
storytelling along the way. Travel in comfort with a small-group and expert
local guide.
7:00 AM – Depart Dunedin
We start our journey with pickups from central Dunedin accommodation and head
south along the scenic coast. Watch the landscape change as we leave the city
and enter one of New Zealand’s most untouched regions.
Nugget Point ** Lighthouse** – Ocean Views & Wildlife
A short walk takes us to the spectacular Nugget Point Lighthouse, perched
above wave-battered sea stacks known as “The Nuggets.” Keep an eye out for
seals sunning on the rocks and seabirds soaring above the ocean below.
Purakaunui Falls – Forest Gem
A quick and easy forest walk brings you to this stunning multi-tiered cascade.
One of the most photographed waterfalls in the country—and for good reason.
Papatowai – Lunch & The Lost Gypsy Caravan
We stop in the peaceful Catlins village of Papatowai for lunch and to explore
the wonderfully quirky Lost Gypsy Caravan, a handcrafted gallery of kinetic
art and oddities that’s sure to spark your imagination.
Curio Bay – Prehistoric Forest & Marine Life
At Curio Bay, step back in time as you walk across the remains of a
180-million-year-old petrified forest (visible at low tide). You may also see
endangered yellow-eyed penguins or Hector’s dolphins nearby.
Alternative: If tides allow, we may visit the Cathedral Caves, two dramatic
sea caverns accessible via a short forest and beach walk (entry fee applies).
Invercargill – Gateway to the South (Optional Stop/Start)
A short stop in Invercargill offers a chance to stretch your legs or
join/disembark the tour. Guests from the city can begin or end their journey
here at approximately 4:00PM.
Arrive in Te Anau
We arrive in Te Anau in the early evening and drop you off at your central
accommodation. Nestled beside stunning Lake Te Anau and gateway to Fiordland,
this welcoming town is your perfect base for exploring the national park or
beginning your next Cheeky Kiwi adventure.
