The palace was renovated in 1808 after Napoleon's defeat when it became the residence for King Louis I and his wife Amalia of Nassau-Weilburg. The palace remained in use as a royal residence until Queen Wilhelmina moved out in 1898. It then served as headquarters for both military and civilian authorities during war.
