Step into the colourful world of the Peranakans through the intricate art of beading. In this hands-on workshop, visitors will discover the beauty and symbolism behind kasut manek (beaded slippers) and other traditional beadwork that once adorned Peranakan homes and weddings.
Guided by heritage educator and artist Angeline Kong, participants will learn the basics of Peranakan beading—setting up the fabric, handling tiny glass beads, and stitching traditional motifs inspired by nature, flowers, and heritage symbols. Each participant will create a small keepsake piece to take home, making the experience both cultural and personal.
Alongside crafting, Angeline shares stories of Peranakan history, lifestyle, and the role of beadwork in family traditions. This immersive programme offers tourists not just a craft session, but a memorable journey into Singapore’s unique multicultural heritage.
