Chanderi Fort, a vast Mughal fort, dominates the skyline of the lovely old town of Chanderi. The main gate of the fort is known as the "Khooni Darwaza". Chanderi fort is situated on a hill 71 meter above the town. The fortification walls were constructed mainly by the Muslim rulers of Chanderi. To the southwest of the fort there is a curious gateway called katti-ghatti made through a hill side.

The prisoners are believed to have been thrown from the fortification above Khooni Darwaza and their bodies shattered to pieces below. Hence, the name Khooni Darwaza which translates to 'gate soaked in blood'.

Its importance as an iconic monument is clear as it form is now etched as a seal which is put on the letters which are posted in Chanderi. This is also the stamp which Madhya Pradesh Handloom Department puts on the hand-woven sarees which Chanderi is famous for.
