Calle El Conde is an old street in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. For a time it was one of the main streets of Santo Domingo, named after the Count of Peñalva.

The city of Santo Domingo is one of the oldest in the Caribbean, however, the National Palace is not a structure from the colonial era. Instead, it recalls a different and more recent period in the history of the Dominican Republic. The National Palace was built in the 1940s during the reign of the Dominican Republic's famously brutal dictator Rafael Trujillo. The National Palace is still used as the seat of the government of the Dominican Republic and the offices of the president, so it is not generally open to the public. However, visitors can explore the exterior and take photos of the impressive architecture of the building.
