There Apollo, the god of light, delivered his oracles through his priestess, Pythia. The Greeks addressed Apollo in every important moment of their history; they showed their gratitude by erecting great monuments along the Sacred Way heading to the god's temple. It is associated with the establishment of democracy in the city, as well as with the victory against the Persians at Marathon. It is regarded as one of the finest samples of ancient Greek architecture, combining its three orders: the Doric, the Ionic and the Corinthian. It was built by the architect Theodoros from Phokaia in Minor Asia or Phokis, who also wrote a book on it.
