XIV, when it was a port of call of great movement for ships heading to Lisbon. However, it was from the 2nd half of the 20th century onwards. The main driver of the transformation was the King of Portugal D. Luís I, who in 1870 converted the fortress of the citadel into the summer residence of the Portuguese monarchy.
