With an Islamic occupation between the 8th and 12th centuries, Palmela Castle was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 and definitively recovered by D. Sancho I. The geographical position of the castle allows a strategic domain of part of the sadino estuary, a slope of the Arrábida mountain range and the surrounding plains that separate it from the Tagus. Arrábida Natural Park is a biogenetic reserve located on the Setúbal peninsula, covering the municipalities of Palmela, Setúbal and Sesimbra, with the highest altitude at Pico do Formosinho, with 501 meters of altitude, in the Setúbal district of Portugal.
