Dam construction began in 1975. His size is impressive: 168 m high, 225 million cubic meters of water in the reservoir, size of dam outperforms three times those of Cheops pyramid. On the Raul Mare river it was built a chain of 10 hydroelectric. Arrangement Raul Mare-Retezat has the role to produce electricity, as well as regulating stream flow and flood wave attenuation. The development of agro-tourism hotels and chalets makes the Gura Apelor Lake to be a recreational place, as they say, a "green" tourism.
