Lake Bucura is a glacier cirque lake, situated in the Retezat Mountains, in Romania. It is located south of the main ridge, at the base of Peleaga Peak, and at an altitude of about 2,040 m. It is the largest glacier lake in Romania, having an area of over 105,000 square metres. It is 550 m in length, 160 m in width on average, and 225 m maximum width, for a perimeter of 1,390 m. altitude -1.000 m. Dam Gura Apelor (Gura Apei) was built into the mountain, on the river Raul Mare, about 40 km from Hateg. It’s the largest rockfill dam in Europe. Dam construction began in 1975. His size is impressive: 168 m high, 225 million cubic meters of water in the reservoir, size of dam outperforms three times those of Cheops pyramid. On the Raul Mare river it was built a chain of 10 hydroelectric. Arrangement Raul Mare-Retezat has the role to produce electricity, as well as regulating stream flow and flood wave attenuation. The development of agro-tourism hotels and chalets makes the Gura Apelor Lake to be a recreational place, as they say, a "green" tourism. In the time spent on Gura Apelor Lake can practice horse riding (riding), hiking, cycling, fishing, or you can enjoy the nature in its splendor.
