The old vine is the only single plant with its own museum, which is housed in the Old Vine House. The house used to be a part of the city walls, and today contains the display of the long wine making tradition, a wine store and a room where visitors can taste wines from the Maribor wine-growing region. WORLD’S OLDEST VINE In the heart of the wine-growing region, Maribor keeps its most precious natural treasure – the oldest vine in the world that, after over 400 years, still bears fruit. The vine of the Modra kavčina or Žametovka variety was entered in the Guinness World Records book. It is believed it was planted at the end of middle Ages. It has survived centuries of invasions, attacks and fires that threatened the city’s existence. It showed its exceptional resilience when grape phylloxera destroyed almost all vineyards in Europe.
