Bukit Malawati is one of the few notable tourist draws in the sleepy district of Kuala Selangor in the Klang Valley. The historic hill is about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. It is also just a stone’s throw away from Pasir Penambang, which is known to be a hub for dried sea products and affordable seafood. So if you ever need a stroll after a hearty lunch on a weekend, consider making the journey here The uphill walk is a great way to burn calories. However, unless you’re athletically inclined or wouldn’t mind being drenched in sweat, we honestly wouldn’t recommend the steep climb. The place is usually teeming with local residents and tourists during the weekends. Its popularity can be attributed to the fact that Bukit Malawati is an all-round great hangout spot. Ample free parking? Check. A spot that blends nature and history? Check. Breezy lookout point? You got it. The top offers spectacular views of the town as well as the Straits of Malacca. In the past, the hill was used as a fort against navy invaders and was a stronghold of the Selangor sultanate. Today, its illustrious past is reflected in the presence of some cannons, foundation stones and colonial homes. The endangered Silvered Leaf Monkey (Silvery Lutung) can be found in abundance around the hill. While most are relatively tame and will feed out of your hand, do be mindful of your personal belongings.
