There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather… Just Inappropriate Clothing

Summer may be the peak travel season on Kangaroo Island, but for nature
lovers, the cooler months offer an equally incredible experience — just in a
very different way. As the saying goes, “There’s no such thing as bad weather,
just inappropriate clothing.”

During autumn, the winds begin to settle and the skies are often bright and
clear, creating perfect conditions for snorkelling, bushwalking, and slower
scenic exploration. The calmer weather often delivers postcard-worthy days,
whether you’re exploring the coastline or enjoying time out on the water.

Winter brings its own kind of magic. With cooler temperatures, wildlife
becomes far more active across the island. Birdlife flourishes, the rugged
coastline feels even more dramatic, and encounters with native wildlife become
even more rewarding. It’s the season when kangaroo joeys begin peeking from
their mothers’ pouches, young koalas cling to their mums in the treetops, and
Southern Right Whales can often be spotted resting in sheltered bays during
their annual migration.

At the same time, the island’s bushland comes alive with wildflowers and
native blooms, creating incredible scenery for photographers, nature
enthusiasts, and travellers looking to experience a more raw and untamed side
of Australia.

Kangaroo Island offers a very different experience depending on the season.
During summer, our focus leans more towards beaches, coastal scenery, swimming
opportunities, and relaxed time by the water. During the cooler months, the
itinerary may shift to reduce beach time and focus more heavily on wildlife
encounters, nature experiences, and seasonal highlights.

While the daily schedule and flow of the itinerary may change significantly
between seasons, all advertised tour inclusions and the overall experience
remain the same — only the way we experience the island changes with nature
itself.

ITINERARY

Day 1 | Adelaide to Kangaroo Island ****

** Wildlife encounters, local flavours and our first taste of island life**

The adventure begins early this morning as we make our way from Adelaide to
Cape Jervis, where we board the ferry across the Backstairs Passage towards
Kangaroo Island. Once on the island, we meet our Storyteller Guide, get to
know the group and settle into the slower pace of island life. Before the day
begins, we also learn how travel can directly support local conservation
through our partnership with Passport to Recovery, giving us the opportunity
to contribute to wildlife recovery efforts while exploring the island.

This morning, we choose how we want to experience Kangaroo Island. For those
looking for something more adventurous, there is the option to join a marine
safari and swim with wild dolphins or seals in the waters surrounding the
island. It is one of the best wildlife encounters in South Australia and a
pretty unforgettable way to start the trip.

If we are staying on land, we spend the morning experiencing another side of
the island through local community and producer experiences. We visit the
Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, learn about the island’s famous Ligurian bees
at a local honey farm, enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch and stop by Emu Ridge
Eucalyptus Distillery to learn more about one of Australia’s most iconic local
products.

**“ One of the best parts of Kangaroo Island is that no two people end up
experiencing the day exactly the same way.” **

Later in the afternoon, the group comes back together at Dudley Wines, a
family owned winery perched high above the coastline. With incredible ocean
views, this usually becomes the moment everyone properly starts relaxing,
sharing stories from the day and settling into the trip.

By late afternoon, we arrive at our private eco campsite Happiness, tucked
away in native bushland with direct access to Antechamber Bay. There is time
to head down to the beach, go for a swim or simply enjoy a quiet moment before
dinner.

Tonight, we roll out our swags beneath the stars and fall asleep to the sounds
of the ocean and bush surrounding camp.

Accommodation: Swag camping with amenities at our private campground,
Happiness

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Distance Travelled: Approx. 280 km

Day 2 | Kangaroo Island

** Sea Lion Encounters & Coastal Icons **

After breakfast, we start the day with one of Kangaroo Island’s most
unforgettable wildlife experiences at Seal Bay Conservation Park. Joining a
guided walk with the local National Parks team, we head down onto the beach
where one of Australia’s largest colonies of endangered Australian sea lions
has made its home. Watching these animals resting on the sand, moving through
the dunes and interacting in their natural environment is a very different
experience from seeing wildlife anywhere else in Australia.

Seal Bay gives a real reminder of what makes Kangaroo Island so special.
Wildlife here does not feel staged or controlled. It feels completely natural,
which is exactly what people remember most.

**“ There are not many places in Australia where wildlife encounters still
feel this raw and untouched.” **

From here, we continue west into Flinders Chase National Park, one of South
Australia’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. We stop at Admirals Arch,
where a boardwalk leads us along dramatic cliffs while New Zealand fur
sealscan often be seen resting on the rocks below. Not far away, we visit the
famous Remarkable Rocks, enormous granite formations that have been shaped by
wind and ocean over hundreds of millions of years and have become one of
Kangaroo Island’s most photographed landmarks.

During the longer summer months, when daylight allows, we may also make an
extra stop at Stokes Bay, a hidden stretch of coastline famous for its
sheltered beach, crystal clear water and unique rock formations, adding one
more incredible side of Kangaroo Island to the day.

After a full day exploring the wild coastline of the island, we return to camp
for a slower evening. There is time to relax, head down to the beach at
Antechamber Bay, swap stories from the day and enjoy another relaxed dinner
beneath the stars.

By now, the group’s starting to click, the campfire’s glowing, and island life
feels pretty hard to leave behind.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Swag camping with amenities at our private campground,
Happiness

Distance Travelled: Approx. 350 km

**Day 3 | Kangaroo Island to Adelaide **

Coastal views, hidden island corners and one final adventure

We start the morning with a relaxed bush walk near camp before packing up and
setting off for one final day exploring more of Kangaroo Island. While the
trip may be coming to an end, there is still plenty left to experience before
we leave the island behind.

Our first stop is Cape Willoughby, home to South Australia’s oldest lighthouse
and perched high above dramatic cliffs overlooking the wild coastline. From
here, we continue to Pennington Bay, where the powerful Southern Ocean shapes
one of the island’s most impressive coastal landscapes.

From the coastline, we tackle the climb up Prospect Hill, one of the highest
vantage points on the island. Reaching the top rewards us with sweeping views
across Kangaroo Island, giving a final reminder of just how wild and untouched
this part of Australia still feels.

**“ Kangaroo Island has a way of reminding people that some of the best parts
of Australia are often the places few travellers ever make it to.” **

If time allows, we stop in Kingscote for a final taste of island life, whether
that means a swim off the jetty, a relaxed picnic lunch, or enjoying a cold
beer in the sunshine before making our way home.

By late afternoon, we return to Penneshaw to board the ferry back to the
mainland before arriving in Adelaide at approximately 9:00 pm, wrapping up
three days of wildlife encounters, coastal landscapes and a side of Australia
many travellers never expect to discover.

Sometimes the places you know the least about end up leaving the biggest
impression.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Itinerary Changes

At Untamed Escapes, your safety and experience are our top priorities. Our
guides are trained to adapt plans as needed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable
journey, rain or shine, or even in the face of a surprise detour. Here's what
to keep in mind:

  • Experienced Guidance: Our storytellers continually assess local conditions, such as weather, road access, and group dynamics, to deliver the best possible experience. Rest assured—every adjustment is made with your comfort, safety, and
experience in mind.
