The legend of Mahsuri supposedly accounts for Langkawi’s relatively ‘newfound’ success and judging by its increasing prosperity, the island has survived the curse. The "Field of Burnt Rice" (Ladang Beras Terbakar) in Langkawi, Malaysia, holds historical significance dating back to the late 18th century. Legend has it that during a Siamese invasion in 1821, the locals of Langkawi, led by a woman named Mahsuri, sought refuge in this rice field. As a defensive measure, they set fire to the rice fields to prevent the invaders from harvesting the crops, leaving nothing behind for them to sustain themselves.
