However, on November 1, 1755 this cosmopolitan city was ravaged by a hideous earthquake, followed by a tsunami - the first such event fully documented in modern European history. The city lost no time looking back and just a couple of years later started the herculean task of its own resurrection, rebuilding from scratch the Downtown and the surrounding area.
