Historians tell us that from 1850 ships came carrying smuggled slaves from the African continent hidden in the basements covered by crates of "chicken d 'angola". So the crews of the ships created a kind of password to announce the arrival of more slaves in Porto: "there is new hen in the port" and hence the name Porto de Galinhas. This is folklore. In fact many people from a region of the interior of Africa called "Chickens" were brought as slaves and landed in the south of Pernambuco, this yes is the origin of the name of the Village.
