Highlights
This class will not only teach how to make mochi, but also you will learn the cultural importance of it. You will also learn some useful tricks on how to handle this very sticky dough. With guidance from a certified instructor, you will learn the basic techniques in making the sweets so that you can recreate them yourself.
When you are finished you will be able to taste your creations with a bowl of matcha that you will learn how to make yourself. The instructor will teach you the etiquette in drinking matcha as well as the tradition and spirit of Chado (tea ceremony)
This cooking class is held at a private studio in Tokyo where you can get an insight into life in Tokyo from a local as well as advice on tourist attractions and shopping.
Itinerary

The class will start off by a short presentation about the traditions and festivals that involve mochi and how it is important to the Japanese culture. Then you will learn to make the Strawberry daifuku mochi and Three-color dango (mochi balls on skewers) FInally, the instructor will show you how to make the nerikiri dough for making nerikiri wagashi. You will then have a hands-on experience of coloring and shaping your own nerikiri wagashi into a seasonal motif. The class will conclude with tasting the sweets with a bowl of matcha green tea which you will learn how to make. There will be a short talk about the Japanese Omotenashi (hospitality spirit) that is the essence of Chado (Tea Ceremony) All ingredients are plant-derived and gluten-free. The instructor who is a certified Nerikiri Art Instructor is very fluent in English so she will be able to give you some insights on the local life as well as advice on where to shop or go sightseeing in Tokyo. Aprons will be provided and an English Recipe Sheet will be given to take home.
