Eindhoven is a modern city, often referred to as the "City of Light." Contrary to what many people might think, Eindhoven did not acquire this nickname due to the presence of the Philips corporation. Instead, the name "City of Light" originates from the match factories that established themselves in Eindhoven from 1970 onwards.
Don't expect to find many historical buildings in Eindhoven, as a significant portion was flattened during World War II. What you can see, however, are contemporary and fresh-looking structures, along with a lot of design elements. Eindhoven is also a true shopping city.

To keep the square as free as possible from cyclists, an underground bicycle parking was built, the 'Tube.' The unique entrances to the bike cellar, resembling tubes emerging from the ground, especially catch the attention. However, what many people may not know is that archaeological finds are on display in this bicycle cellar. On the other side of the 18 Septemberplein stands a similar structure, the Bubble. As the name suggests, it is a soap bubble, but made of glass and steel.
