The Shahid Minar in Bangladesh commemorates the Bengali Language Movement of 1952, honoring those who died advocating for Bengali as an official language of then-East Pakistan. The movement arose against Urdu's imposition as the sole official language, sparking protests. On February 21, 1952, peaceful demonstrators faced violent suppression, resulting in deaths that galvanized support for Bengali's recognition as an official language in 1956. Originally built as a symbol of cultural identity, the Shahid Minar was tragically demolished during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 but rebuilt after independence. Its modernist design features intricate motifs and inscriptions, serving as a focal point for annual gatherings on February 21st, now International Mother Language Day .
