It was built during 1560-1562 on the site of Michelangelo's old stables, which had been converted into a sculptural gallery in 1549. The building was designed by Giorgio Vasari, who wanted to create a building that would be an ornament to the Piazza della Signoria, "an imitation of the antique world."
