  • Enter the ruins via the main entrance and ascend the stairs of the surrounding moat. Upon reaching the top, you will be greeted by the impressive sight of Ishibutai Kofun’s enormous stone chamber. Take a moment to feel the massive granite boulders, called Asuka stones, and peer through the masonry gaps for a glimpse inside.

    Next, descend the stairs leading into the ruins. As you pass through the entrance, you’ll find yourself in the core of the ruins—the stone chamber—where Soga no Umako, a significant figure in early Japanese political, economic, and cultural history, was entombed.

    After your exploration of the chamber, cross the moat to discover a replica of the original sarcophagus, which was reused for castle construction during the Middle Ages. Once you’ve finished your visit, head back to the entrance.
