The reservoir was formed at an altitude of 885 meters above sea level under the Nurek dam.
Currently, one of the most powerful hydroelectric power plants in Central Asia, the dam which is listed in the Guinness book of Records as the highest bulk dam in the world. The height of the Nurek hydroelectric dam is 304 meters.

Construction of the dam began in 1961 and was completed in 1980, when Tajikistan was a republic within the Soviet Union. The middle of the lake is also a great place to simply admire the vast gorges and snow capped peaks on all sides.
