Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy. We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout. Self drive to farm or contact Shamarra Alpacas for transport providers.

One of our best activity in NZ. The alpacas were clean and very tame. The farm experience was really one of the best as the provider gave us good tips on how to approach them. 10/10!!

Very informative session being able to cuddle and pet the male alpaca and feed the baby and female alpaca.
We absolutely loved the experience, the alpacas were adorable and the whole activity was such a joy! 🦙 Big thanks to "i" the friendly and helpful guide who made everything smooth and fun. Feeding the alpacas was definitely the highlight for us! If anything, we just wish the session lasted longer, we wanted more time to take photos, shoot videos, and just hang out with these fluffy cuties. Just a heads up: some alpacas might sneeze on you (like what happened to me 😅), and trust me, it’s not the kind of scent you want to keep. My whole face and body smelled awful until I cleaned up and took a proper bath, unforgettable in every way! 😂 Still, 100% recommend this unique and wholesome experience. Just bring some wipes… and maybe a change of clothes, just in case! 😉
