Dazaifu Dazaifu (formerly known as Dazaifu) was the 'distant court' of ancient Japan that governed Kyushu and handled diplomacy and military affairs, serving as the gateway to the East Asian continent (Tang Dynasty, Silla). Today, it is famous for its rich historical sites and the Tenmangu Shrine. It is the head shrine of approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar of the Heian period (the God of Learning). Students flock here to pray during exam season. The Omotesando approach is lined with shops, including a wooden Starbucks designed by Kengo Kuma, which is a popular photo spot due to its unique play of light and shadow. Raizan Sennyoji Temple Located on the hillside of Mount Raizan in Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Sennyoji Daihioin (commonly known as Raizan Kannon) is a head temple of the Shingon sect Daikakuji-ha with a long history dating back to the Emperor Seimu era (traditionally 178 AD). It houses a wooden standing statue of Thousand-Armed Kannon and a seated statue of Priest Seiga, both designated as Important Cultural Properties. It is also home to a group of ancient maple trees designated as a natural monument by Fukuoka Prefecture. From mid-to-late November, the mountains are covered in autumn leaves, which, combined with the Heart-shaped Pond and the dry landscape garden, create a Zen atmosphere. It is also a popular pilgrimage site for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and warding off evil, with the popular 'Samuhara' amulet being deeply loved by devotees.
Sakurai Futamigaura Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks) Legend has it that this is the entrance to the Dragon Palace, and it is a sacred site for praying for happy marriages and family harmony. Around the summer solstice, the sunset falls precisely between the two rocks, bathing the sea in orange and red light. During the 'blue hour' before sunrise and after sunset, the sea and sky are dyed in a serene blue, making it a spectacular view highly sought after by photographers.
