Estoril is a town in the Municipality of Cascais, Portugal, on the Portuguese Riviera. It is famed as a major international luxury tourist entertainment destination, and is known for its luxury hotels, (including the Hotel Palacio made famous by 007) beaches, and the Casino Estoril. Famed for having been home to numerous royal families and famous personalities, the town is also known for hosting numerous notable events, such as the Estoril Open and the Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival. Estoril is one of the most expensive places to live in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. It is home to a sizable foreign community and known for its luxury restaurants, hotels, and entertainment. Estoril and the surrounding area is consistently ranked for its high quality of living, making it one of the most livable places in Portugal.

As you walk along the Boardwalk from Estoril to Cascais you come across Praia do Tamariz. Located at the foot of the gardens leading up to Estoril Casino, it was once known as Elegant Beach and graced by the high society that then spent their summers on the Estoril coast. With soft golden sands, clean sea waters, the Praia de Tamariz is surrounded by bars and restaurants and close to Estoril. It is very popular with families.

Cascais rose to fame after the king of Portugal, King Luis I went for a swim here in 1870. Afterward, the Portuguese royal family made it their residence and traveled here every September. Other kings followed suit, with the likes of Umberto II of Italy, Juan Carlos of Spain, and Edward VIII of the UK making it their seaside resort of choice. Portugal’s most chic resort, Cascais is known for its three stunning bays and boasts delicious upscale restaurants, luxurious hotels, and non-pareil beaches. But it is the tranquil atmosphere of luxury and ease, along with its stunning seaside esplanade that makes it one of Europe’s most prized seaside destinations.

Located at latitude 38º 47´north and longitude 9º 30´west, Cabo da Roca is an important coordinate for those sailing along the coast, as it is the most westerly point of mainland Europe, a fact borne out by the certificates that visitors take away as a souvenir. Around 150 metres above the sea, here you can have a panoramic view over the Serra de Sintra and the coast, which makes it worth the visit. And even better when the sun us setting.

Praia das Maçãs (Apple beach) is one of the most popular beaches within striking distance of Lisbon. The name comes from the fact that once upon a time apples would fall off trees upstream of the (Ribeira de Colares) river that flows along the southern side of the beach. These would then wash up on the beach - hence the name. This is as close as you will get to an English seaside resort in Portugal!!
