The name of the island is the deformation of the name given to it in the Middle Ages by Venetian merchants. They called it Saint Irene, because she was the patron saint of the island. In 1576 Santorini became part of the Duchy of Naxos, until the Turkish conquest of Piyale Pasha. Optionally, and if weather conditions permit, we can purchase a dazzling sailboat ride that visits the small islands located inside the caldera, Nea and Palea Kameni.
