What You Can Expect
A Dark Sky Culinary Journey is a three-hour evening experience operating
exclusively in the cooler months from May to September, designed to make the
most of Tasmania’s dark skies. Guests arrive at 28 Morrison Street, Hobart by
5:30 PM for a 5:45 PM bus transfer 20km south to Margate, where they board the
locally built 55ft catamaran Cuttlefish for a one-way land and sea loop cruise
back toward the city, returning to Elizabeth Street Pier just after 8:30 PM
with views of the city lights.
The evening features a set dinner service beginning with a welcome hot gin
cider, followed by local Tasmanian produce including abalone and oysters,
vegetable soup with rolls, scallop pies packed with generous scallops, and
Julie’s Mum’s special apple cake served with fresh fruit and cream, with
additional drinks available for purchase.
As the vessel cruises the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, an ideal location for
stargazing and potential Aurora Australis sightings and the crew shares
stories connecting sky, land, and sea, from Indigenous celestial traditions to
family histories of navigating by starlight, while guests may spot nocturnal
marine life such as seals, dolphins, or even seven-gill sharks.
The all-weather vessel offers two heated cabins with leather lounges, outdoor
heaters creating a cozy camp-fire-like atmosphere, and multiple outdoor
viewing platforms and a flybridge for those stepping out into the cool night
air.
