Avignon Self-Guided City Walking Tour & Scavenger Hunt
Avignon Self-Guided City Walking Tour & Scavenger Hunt
For KrisFlyer members only
Highlights
For seventy years in the 1300s, this walled city on the Rhône — not Rome — was the centre of the Catholic world, and Avignon has never stopped acting like it.
This app-led scavenger hunt takes you through Avignon on foot, using phone-based riddles to guide you from one landmark to the next. No guide, no fixed start time.
• Follow the water wheels through the Quartier des Teinturiers, the old dyers' district
• Crack clues beneath the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe
• Inspect the Hôtel de Ville and its clock tower on the Place de l'Horloge
Around 2 hours, any group size, available in English, French, and Italian.
When the last riddle is solved, the city of the popes will have let you in on secrets most visitors walk right past.
Itinerary
45 Rue des Teinturiers
Starting at 45 Rue des Teinturiers, on Avignon's most atmospheric cobbled street, you'll open the Explorial app, enter the 6-digit game code that you received by text and Viator chat message, and begin the hunt. The tour is fully self-guided — no guide, no fixed start time, just your group and the city. The Quartier des Teinturiers sets the tone: water wheels still turn in the Sorgue canal where dyers and weavers worked for centuries, and the riddles here reward sharp eyes. At the Palais des Papes, the fortress-palace where nine popes held court, you'll work out clues in the shadow of walls that once guarded the papal treasury. The Hôtel de Ville on Place de l'Horloge adds a newer chapter — a 19th-century city hall built around a 14th-century clock tower, with details hiding in plain sight. Expect around 2 hours at an easy pace, pausing for a café stop whenever you like. By the end, you'll know why the popes were in no hurry to go back to Rome.
