— What You Can Expect —
Make your way to Timbun Mata Island, over 26 km long and at its widest nearly
10 km wide. The island is mountainous and was formerly densely wooded. Feast
your eyes on Mt. Tannabalu, towering at 620 m—a conical, extinct volcano
located at the island's center. A secondary peak at the east end of the
island, Mt. Sedungal, rises up to 489 m. The south side of the island is only
separated from the mainland by a shallow channel known as the Trusan Sigalong.
The island has been inhabited since before records were kept. There are
several villages on the island that have been there for at least several
hundred years: Mantandak in the west, Lakai Lakai in the north, Dap Dap to the
northeast, and Kubor in the east.
The island was declared a forest reserve in 1930, but had been planted in teak
as early as the 1880s. The teak forests have been periodically surveyed, but
inroads by illegal logging and land clearing have reduced them.
Go on an enriching day trip surrounded by nature! Get your adrenaline pumping
with fun water activities and explore what this beautiful island has in store.
