10 Best Day Trips from Kyoto Besides Osaka & Nara

Joel Conceicao

Last updated: Apr 15, 20257 minutes

Young woman traveller with an orange bag and a beanie, standing on tree roots and taking a photo of the beautiful autumn landscape in Arashiyama, Japan. Boats float on the river, adding to the scenic view.

Once you’ve ticked off the usual things to do in Kyoto – like temple hopping, wandering Gion, and getting lost in bamboo forests – it’s time to think beyond the city. And day trips are where the real surprises begin.

But the go-to Kyoto day trip everyone thinks of? Yep - that’d be Osaka or Nara.

Don’t get us wrong - feeding the deer at Nara Park is a must (and it’s super convenient if you’re hopping on a bus tour).

The same goes for Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, and the whole shebang.

But honestly, there’s so much more to explore just a train ride away (thanks to the JR Pass, naturally).

Think jaw-dropping coastal views, mountaintop temples that’ll make your jaw drop (again), mystical castle towns, and underrated spiritual spots.

So, without further ado - here are the top day trips from Kyoto besides Osaka and Nara:

Nature & Scenic Day Trips from Kyoto

1. Amanohashidate – Japan's Bridge to Heaven

Japan is the land of scenic views. And to be named one of Japan’s top three most scenic spots, you’ve got to be something special.

Amanohashidate, on the Tango Peninsula, is just that - extra special.

If you're the kind of traveller who loves to be surrounded by nature on a day trip from Kyoto, this is your spot.

The epic view overlooks the stunning Miyazu Bay - perfect for anyone craving sea views.

As for getting there, JR Hashidate Limited Express trains to Amanohashidate are infrequent. Plus, highway buses are scarce - and they take around two hours.

So, hopping on a tour is definitely the easier option.

The Kyoto Hidden Gems Tour is a great pick. After exploring Amanohashidate, it also takes you to the charming Ine Boathouses, where traditional wooden boathouses line the waterfront for a postcard-perfect view.

Pro tip: the scenery at Amanohashidate changes with the seasons. Spring is ideal for cherry blossom viewing, while in winter, the snow-covered pine trees along the sandbar are downright magical.

2. Lake Biwa – A Refreshing Break by Japan’s Largest Freshwater Lake

If you had to pick just one Kyoto day tour, make it an excursion to Lake Biwa.

It’s easily accessible by train. And with its scenic beauty immortalised in the historic Eight Views of Ōmi ukiyo-e prints, you really can't go wrong with a trip here.

In fact, you could easily spend a few days and still have plenty left to do. There are Lake Biwa cruises - and a highlight is the American-style, four-decked Michigan Paddle Steamer. We highly recommend the night cruise with fireworks!

Don’t forget to stop by Mangetsuji Ukimido, a small wooden temple that’s also an ultra-scenic photo spot. You can also make a side trip to Ogoto Onsen, a fantastic way to take in the lake's stunning landscapes while enjoying an open-air hot spring bath.

You can also visit the gorgeous Hikone Castle, a photographer’s dream.

Pro tip: photography at the castle is best in the afternoon, when the sun is lower in the western sky.

3. Mount Hiei – Where Nature Meets Spirituality

Rich cultural heritage plus incredible nature? Count us in.

Mount Hiei is steeped in history and spiritual legend - it’s home to the famed “marathon monks,” who take on the gruelling 1,000-day kaihōgyō challenge in pursuit of enlightenment.

This picturesque mountain to the northeast of Kyoto is also home to Enryaku-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and easily one of the most beautiful temples in the country.

As for hiking, you can summit Mount Hiei in about three hours starting from Kyoto’s Shugakuin Station.

Pro tip: Not a hiker? Take the Sakamoto Cable Car from the Shiga side - it gets you to the top in just 11 minutes. Fun fact: it’s the longest cable car ride in Japan!

4. Daimonji-yama (Mt Daimonji) – Best Short Hike in Kyoto

Kyoto is blessed with over 100 scenic hiking trails. But if you’re short on time and looking for a quick half-day trip, why not hike up Daimonji-yama?

Photo: @louispassagne on Instagram

Technically, it’s still within Kyoto city, but it makes a great add-on to a Kyoto one-day trip itinerary.

The trail is super accessible - it takes just about an hour round trip from Ginkaku-ji Temple to the peak.

And the payoff? Stunning views over Kyoto’s city centre. It’s the perfect way to stretch your legs if you’ve only got half a day to spare.

Cultural & Spiritual Escapes for Day Trippers

5. Uji & Byodo-in – Matcha Capital Meets Temple Beauty

First-time visitors to Kyoto are bound to be awestruck by its temples. And with around 1,600 temples and 400 shrines, who wouldn’t be?

But if you’re all about quality over quantity, a Kyoto to Uji day trip is a must.

It’s an easy ride from the city, with frequent trains running along the JR Nara Line (both rapid and local).

Once you arrive, explore the stunning 10th-century Byōdō-in Temple. Then, head to nearby Taihoan, a public teahouse where you can take part in an authentic tea ceremony. While you're there, you'll sip on world-famous Uji tea.

Afterward, don’t miss the new Nintendo Museum - it's a must for any otaku.

Pro tip: Join the Kyoto Matcha Green Tea Tour. You’ll get to try your hand at matcha making and sample wagashi - traditional Japanese sweets that predates Western-style desserts and pairs perfectly with Japanese green tea.

6. Mount Koya – A Taste of the Pilgrim’s Path

The ancient Kumano Kodo Trail - once walked by pilgrims and even members of the Japanese imperial family - is steeped in history and spiritual significance.

And Mount Koya, a key stop along the trail in rural Japan, is an absolute must-visit.

Okay, so you won’t be able to tackle the full Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail in a day (it takes about 4.5 days on foot to complete). But if you’re short on time, Mount Koya offers a beautiful taster.

The main attractions here include Kongobuji Temple (which translates to “Diamond Peak Temple”) and Okunoin Cemetery - Japan’s largest graveyard, and more serene and scenic than spooky.

Well, in any case, adventure awaits on this trail. And if a one-day trip from Kyoto isn’t enough, perhaps an overnight trip is just what you need.

7. Chionin Temple – A Majestic Spot Right in Kyoto

Chionin Temple sits right in the heart of Kyoto - so no, you won’t be leaving the city for this one.

But if you’re short on time and can’t swing a full or half-day trip out of town, it’s a fantastic alternative.

Step into Japan’s rich history at the head temple of the Jōdo sect of Buddhism.

Marvel at the impressive Sanmon Gate - Chionin’s main entrance and one of the largest wooden gates in Japan.

You can also follow a quiet path behind the Mieidō Hall that winds up the hillside to a few tucked-away buildings.

Don’t miss the Amidado Hall, where the Amida Buddha (the central figure of the Jōdo sect) is enshrined.

Castles, History & Offbeat Cities

8. Kobe Day Trip – A Day of Wagyu, Waterfronts, and Whisky

Done exploring Kyoto? Well, here’s one of those nearby cities in Western Japan you have to visit.

Kobe may be best known for its world-famous Kobe beef – a high-grade variety of Wagyu. But there’s so much more packed into this stylish port city. Plus, it’s just under an hour from Kyoto Station by rail, making it a super easy one-day trip from Kyoto by train.

Start with a stroll around Kobe Harborland, a vibrant waterfront area filled with shopping, dining, and impressive views of the iconic Kobe Port Tower.

Of course, visiting Kobe without savouring melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu beef at one of the city’s many steakhouses should be a crime. No shame in splurging – you’re on holiday, after all.

And if you’re into Japanese whisky, don’t miss the Kobe Distillery. Or pop over to the nearby Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum in Nada for a smooth sip of sake history.

Pro tip: Hop on the Shin-Kobe Ropeway up to Nunobiki Herb Gardens for panoramic views and relaxing garden paths.

9. Himeji – Japan’s Most Beautiful Castle

Already been to Nijo Castle and loved it? Then check off another castle from your list with a day trip from Kyoto to Himeji!

There you’ll find Himeji Castle, also known as the “White Heron Castle”. It’s often listed among the most beautiful places in Japan, thanks to its flawless architecture and historical significance.

The architecture and surrounding area will have photographers swarming like ants to honey.

The best part? The journey is a total breeze (yay for bullet trains!), only slightly over an hour from Kyoto to Himeji.

Pro tip: If you have some extra time, why not join a private tour of this 400-year-old gem? The tour also includes a stop at Nadagiku Shuzo Sake Brewery where you can learn about the sake brewing process and try some unique flavours.

Hidden Gems & Spiritual Kyoto Day Trips

10. Ise Jingu – A Sacred Escape to Japan’s Most Important Shrine

When it comes to Japan’s iconic landmarks, you can’t miss a trip down to the Ise-Shima region in Mie Prefecture.

Just a short ride from Kyoto on the Kintetsu Railways line, you’ll find Ise Jingu, or the Ise Grand Shrine.

Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, this shrine is over 2,000 years old and is considered the most important in the Shinto religion.

Other attractions in the area include Okage Yokocho – a charming street lined with historical buildings from the Edo and Meiji eras that’ll transport you back in time – and Meoto Iwa, a sacred site featuring two coastal rocks that represent the male and female deities who created Japan.

Pro tip: If you’re planning a Kyoto one day trip, keep in mind that while the shrine is relatively close to the old capital, the journey takes nearly three hours by rail.

Bonus: Honourable Day Trip Mentions

  • Nara Park – We know we said we’d skip Nara as a Kyoto day trip, but with its convenient location and iconic appeal, it’s hard to leave out. Situated in central Nara City, this park is perfect for a relaxing stroll - and of course, feeding deer.

  • Kasuga Taisha Shrine – Conveniently located right next to Nara Park, this peaceful shrine is full of charm and culture. With hundreds of hanging lanterns lining the paths, it’s especially magical at night. It’s a must-see among Japan’s many temples, and it’s easy to pair with a visit to Nara Park.

  • Kamigamo Jinja Shrine – Technically still in Kyoto, this serene shrine offers a peaceful escape from the city’s crowds. A true local gem that gives you a quiet glimpse into Kyoto’s culture. Fun fact: Emperor Meiji once visited this very shrine to inform the deity of the restoration of imperial rule.

  • Kyoto to Shirakawago day trip – It’s a long journey. But if you’re up for the adventure, the thatched roof houses look like they’ve been plucked straight from a fairytale. Just be sure to plan ahead - this destination really deserves a multi-day trip rather than a rushed day one.
