When does my Global eSIM start?
Your Global eSIM plan starts when you install the eSIM while you are in a covered country.
Because of this, we strongly recommend:
Wait until you arrive at your destination before installing your Global eSIM
Connect your phone to a strong, stable Wi-Fi network before installing it
Do not install the eSIM while you are still at home if your home country is covered by the Global eSIM
If you install your Global eSIM in a country that is covered by the plan, your plan may start immediately.
For example, if Singapore is covered by your Global eSIM and you install the eSIM while you are still in Singapore, your plan can start in Singapore even if you are travelling to another country later.
How to install your Global eSIM
We recommend installing your Global eSIM only after you arrive at your destination.
Before you start:
Arrive at your destination
Connect your phone to a strong, stable Wi-Fi network
Keep your Primary SIM available if you need it for calls or messages
If you selected “For myself”
Open the Pelago App
Log in to the Pelago App using the account used for your booking
On the "Explore" tab of the App, find your Global eSIM
Tap Install eSIM
Follow the instructions on your phone to complete the installation
Return to the Pelago App and check that your eSIM has been installed successfully
If you see “Activate” instead of “Install eSIM” on the Explore tab:
This means your Pelago eSIM is already installed on your device. You do not need to install it again.
To start using your Global eSIM:
Turn on your Pelago eSIM line in your device settings
Turn on Data Roaming for your Pelago eSIM
If you selected “For someone else”
Wait until you arrive at your destination
Connect the intended device to a strong, stable Wi-Fi networ
Open your booking confirmation email
Find your Global eSIM QR code
Use the intended device to scan the QR code
Follow the instructions on your phone to complete the installation
Important: Installing your Global eSIM does not necessarily mean that you should turn it on immediately. If you are still at home, keep the eSIM line turned off until you reach your destination.
How to activate your Global eSIM
After you install your Global eSIM at your destination:
Open your device's SIM / Mobile Service / Cellular settings
Turn on your Pelago eSIM line
Turn on Data Roaming for your Pelago eSIM
Wait a few minutes for your phone to connect to a supported mobile network.
Once connected, you should see:
Mobile network signal bars
A network indicator such as 4G, LTE or 5G
Test your connection
Turn off Wi-Fi and try opening a website or app.
If the website or app loads, your Global eSIM is providing mobile data.
What if I installed my Global eSIM before travelling?
If you installed your Global eSIM before travelling, your plan may already have started if you were in a covered country at the time of installation.
If you are still at home:
Do not use the Global eSIM for mobile data
Keep the Pelago eSIM line turned off
When you arrive at your destination, turn on the Pelago eSIM line
Turn on Data Roaming
Important: Turning off the eSIM after installation may prevent further use, but it does not undo a plan that has already started.
If your plan started earlier than expected, check the Pelago App for your plan's validity and expiry information.
Why did my Global eSIM start earlier than expected?
Your Global eSIM may have started earlier than expected if it connected to a supported mobile network before your trip.
Global eSIM plans work differently from some single-country or regional eSIM plans:
The plan starts automatically: The plan starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network in a covered country.
Your home country may be covered: If your home country is included in the Global eSIM coverage, turning on the eSIM there may start your plan.
The validity period starts immediately: Your plan's validity period is calculated from the time the eSIM first connects to a supported network.
Example
If you have a 72-hour Global eSIM plan and it first connects to a supported network at 10:00 AM on Monday, the plan will expire at 10:00 AM on Thursday.
It does not wait until your intended travel date.
How to avoid starting your Global eSIM too early
If you install your Global eSIM before travelling:
Install it while connected to Wi-Fi.
Keep the Global eSIM line turned off after installation.
Do not use the Global eSIM for mobile data while you are still at home.
Turn on the Global eSIM and Data Roaming only when you arrive at your destination.
This helps prevent your plan from starting before your trip.
